Co-op placements: what changed for post-secondary students?

An April IRCC notice removes a separate permit step for eligible program-required placements. Eligibility still matters.

The change

From April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate work permit for placements required by their study program, including co-op and internships. The employer must be approved by the designated learning institution as part of the program requirements.

Questions for your school and consultant

Confirm that the placement is required by your program and that you meet the official criteria. IRCC says eligible active co-op permit applications will be withdrawn without action by the student. This change does not cover every kind of student employment.
